Putting People First. Growing a Texas That Works.
Steven Rivas is an Austinite and sixth-generation Texan whose career bridges public safety, disaster recovery, and Democratic leadership.
Raised by a bilingual telephone operator and CWA labor organizer, Steven learned early that service means standing up for others. He began volunteering on campaigns as a kid and never stopped fighting for fairness and opportunity.
A former medic and 9-1-1 responder, Steven later joined FEMA and helped Texas communities recover after hurricanes and floods. A past Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM®), he has advised cities and counties on how to rebuild stronger, safer, and smarter.
Today, Steven serves as the District 3 Commissioner on the City of Austin LGBTQIA+ Quality of Life Commission and Chairs the Mayor's Public Spaces Task Force. A former National Delegate to the Democratic National Convention for Hillary Clinton, he has advised Democratic campaigns across Texas and helped elect leaders who put people first.
Steven is running for the Texas House to keep that promise to his neighbors: that government should work as hard as the people it serves.
Steven has spent his life showing up for Texans. As a medic, a 9-1-1 responder, and a FEMA disaster recovery leader, he has seen what strong communities can do when they have the resources and respect they deserve.
Now he is running for the Texas House to put people first and build a Texas that works for everyone.
Steven's priorities come from lived experience. He knows that strong public schools change lives because they changed his. He knows rural and urban economies rise together because he has worked with the farmers, ranchers, and manufacturers who keep Texas moving. And he knows what it takes to protect families during storms, floods, and emergencies because he has done that work firsthand.
Your contribution powers a community-driven, results-focused campaign. When you give, you help elect a leader who shows up, delivers results, and fights for every Texan.
Steven is running to put people before politics and to grow a Texas that works in every zip code, from Austin neighborhoods to rural communities across the state.
* Some community and Democratic leaders have chosen to support more than one candidate in the Texas House District 49 race. This reflects shared values and the work Steven has done together with them over many years to make a difference in Austin and across Texas.
